Bainbridge Island, located in Puget Sound just a short ferry ride from Seattle, is a picturesque island known for its natural beauty and small-town charm. Lush forests, scenic beaches, and stunning views of the surrounding water and mountains add to its appeal. Downtown Winslow is the main hub, offering shops, restaurants, cafes, and a bustling marina. Unique plant nurseries and Bloedel Reserve, a stunning public garden and forest reserve, contribute to the island's allure for gardening enthusiasts.

The ferry terminal to Bainbridge is located on the Seattle waterfront, near Pioneer Square and the Seattle Aquarium. Ferries depart approximately every hour between Seattle and Bainbridge, with tickets available for purchase at the terminal.

As this route doesn't offer reservations, it's advisable to arrive early, especially considering its popularity among commuters and tourists alike. The ferry crossing takes about 35 minutes, during which you can enjoy stunning views of the Seattle skyline, the Olympic Mountains, and Puget Sound.

Plant Nurseries

Start your botanical inspired field trip at Bay Hay and Feed, an enchanting nursery known for its beautiful plants, gardening supplies, and unique gifts. Bay Hay is just a five minute drive from the ferry terminal.

From there, explore Bainbridge Gardens nursery, just a ten minute drive from Bay Hay and Winslow. The nursery offers a diverse selection of plants, including perennials, annuals, native plants, and specialty plants, all of which are well-suited for the region's unique gardening conditions.


Restaurants & Shopping

Indulge in a leisurely lunch in Winslow, where local restaurants offer fresh, seasonal dishes. Bruciato Pizzeria, a beloved spot, serves Neapolitan-style pizzas with creative toppings, along with house-made meats and delicious desserts.

For those 21 and over, unwind at The Harbour Public House, a waterfront eatery overlooking Eagle Harbor. Sip on handcrafted cocktails and savor Northwest cuisine on their outdoor patio, then take a stroll along the picturesque waterfront trail. Don't forget to visit Bon Bon Candies shop for locally made fudge, chocolates, and other sweet treats after your meal.


Bloedel Reserve

After lunch, drive ten minutes to the northern end of the island for a tour of Bloedel Reserve, a stunning 140-acre garden estate featuring a diverse range of landscapes, including beautifully manicured gardens, dense woodlands, and tranquil ponds, providing a serene end to your plant-filled adventure. The 2-mile walking trail that winds through the Reserve is intended to provide a peaceful and immersive experience in nature.

Advance reservations are required, so be sure to book online prior to your visit. Parking and facilities are available at the Reserve. Pets are not allowed on the property.


Additional Sightseeing

If you have extra time or wish to extend your trip on Bainbridge Island, consider these activities for a fun-filled weekend adventure.

HIKING
Bainbridge has several parks to experience the beauty of the island. Walk the 2.3 mile loop under the canopy of maple, Douglas fir and cedar trees at the Grand Forest Park Trail (West). The trail is mostly flat and takes about an hour.  The 2.4 mile Connector Trail from Fort Ward Park to Blakeley Harbor Park hike is a great way to experience nature as well as exploring the tide pools at the Fort Ward’s beach. The trail can be accessed from either park, and each of them have additional hiking trails, easily extending the distance of your hike. 

BEACHES
Fay Bainbridge Park on the north end of the island, has a beautiful expansive sandy beach ideal for beachcombing or relaxing in the sun. The park also offers campsites, picnic areas, and a playground. Or explore the 139 acre historic Fort Ward Park on the south end of the island, with views of passing ships on the pebble beach and former military fort.

SHOPPING
Explore the unique shops in downtown Winslow, such as Petit & Olson, an upscale boutique featuring apparel, home decor, and one-of-a-kind antiques; Dana’s on Bainbridge, offering gifts, children's items, furniture, and home decor; and Salt House Mercantile, which provides bath goods, home decor, and fine foods.

FARMER’S MARKET
From 10am-2pm on Saturdays (April-November), enjoy the Bainbridge Island Farmer’s Market with artisan food, handmade crafts, locally grown produce and live music in the heart of downtown Winslow. Support local farms and pick up some fresh produce by visiting Suyematsu Farms who have a lovely farm stand, and seasonal u-pick berries and dahlias.

ACCOMODATIONS
In downtown Winslow, stay at the Eagle Harbor Inn, a boutique hotel just off Winslow Way with views of Eagle Harbor.  In the morning, enjoy breakfast sandwiches and house-made pastries just across the street at Pegasus Coffee House. Or indulge in an elegant room at The Inn at Pleasant Beach. This upscale hotel is surrounded by shops and restaurants in Lynnwood Center, a historic community on the south end of the island. 

MORE DINING
Consider attending a farm dinner offered Thursday and Friday nights at HeyDay Farm. Meals are crafted from fresh, seasonal ingredients grown and raised on the farm, and served in a communal dining atmosphere. Lynnwood Center also has unique dining opportunities, many with live music. Enjoy a meal on the patio at the Treehouse Cafe or enjoy a glass of wine and live music at Earth + Vine wine bar.
