In mid to late spring, pendent cup shaped flowers in rich wine purple appear beneath the foliage, lending color within shaded plantings.

Rhizomatous growth forms slowly expanding colonies while each new leaf unfurls with a leathery surface and softly lobed outline. The hybrid was selected in cultivation from Asian parentage, reflecting mountain forest ancestry and a seasonal rhythm of emergence, summer fullness, and autumn dormancy before renewed spring growth again.
