About this plant
Rosa 'Eddie's Jewel' is a Moyesii hybrid shrub rose showcasing large, semi-double deep red blossoms with prominent stamens that appear in a single main flush in mid to late spring. These lush blooms emerge on vigorous, arching canes that carry attractive foliage with a character reminiscent of its Moyesii parentage. A light, sweet scent emanates from the flowers, drawing pollinators and adding a delicate aromatic touch to garden beds or mixed borders.
Developed and introduced by Canadian breeder J. H. Eddie in 1962, this rose features a strong, upright habit and abundant red thorns along its stems. It is valued for its hardy nature, repeat blooming occasionally later in the season, and its bold floral statement in woodland‑edge or mixed shrub plantings.
Planting & care
Roses reward a sunny, open site with at least six hours of direct light, good air movement, and well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Water deeply and less often, soaking the root zone while keeping the leaves dry, and mulch with two to three inches of compost or shredded bark held back from the canes. Feed repeat-blooming roses in early spring as growth starts and again after the first flush, then prune in late winter to remove dead or crossing canes and open the center. Shrub roses need only light thinning, keeping their natural full shape and repeat bloom.
