Rosa 'Hansa', commonly known as Hansa rose, is an eye-catching shrub rose prized for its vibrant, fragrant flowers and vigorous growth habit. This hybrid rugosa rose is renowned for its rich magenta-purple flowers and attractive, disease-resistant foliage, making it a popular choice for gardens and landscapes.
In late spring to early summer, 'Hansa' produces clusters of large, semi-double flowers with a strong, spicy fragrance, followed by small, round hips that ripen to deep red in autumn. The dark green, leathery foliage has a wrinkled appearance characteristic of rugosa roses. Thriving in full sun to partial shade, 'Hansa' is well-suited for mixed borders, informal hedges, and cottage gardens, where its colorful flowers and fragrant blooms can be appreciated up close.
Planting & care
Roses reward a sunny, open site with at least six hours of direct light, good air movement, and well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Water deeply and less often, soaking the root zone while keeping the leaves dry, and mulch with two to three inches of compost or shredded bark held back from the canes. Feed repeat-blooming roses in early spring as growth starts and again after the first flush, then prune in late winter to remove dead or crossing canes and open the center. Rugosas are famously tough, thriving in lean soil with very little fuss once settled.
