Rosa 'Sir John Betjeman' is an English shrub rose known for its bright crimson‑red, full‑petalled rosettes that open from small buds and deepen in color as they age. These very full flowers emerge in repeat flushes from late spring through autumn and give off a light, fresh fragrance. Glossy dark green foliage frames each bloom, and its bushy, rounded form with slightly arching stems fills beds, borders, or paths with rich floral color.
This rose was bred by David C. H. Austin in the United Kingdom and introduced in 2008. It is celebrated for its consistent bloom performance, healthy foliage, and color depth-even in ageing petals. Named in honor of the writer‑broadcaster Sir John Betjeman, this rose blends garden presence and refined garden elegance.
Planting & care
Roses reward a sunny, open site with at least six hours of direct light, good air movement, and well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Water deeply and less often, soaking the root zone while keeping the leaves dry, and mulch with two to three inches of compost or shredded bark held back from the canes. Feed repeat-blooming roses in early spring as growth starts and again after the first flush, then prune in late winter to remove dead or crossing canes and open the center. Shrub roses need only light thinning, keeping their natural full shape and repeat bloom.
