About this plant
Calycanthus 'Hartlage Wine' produces large, magnolia-like burgundy-red flowers from late spring into early summer, with additional blooms sometimes appearing later in the season. Broad, glossy green leaves create a lush canopy with a bold texture, emerging fresh green in spring and developing warm yellow tones before dropping in autumn. The distinctive flowers feature numerous narrow, overlapping tepals surrounding a creamy center, giving each bloom a rich, layered appearance and adding dramatic color among the foliage.
Developed at North Carolina State University as a hybrid between North American Calycanthus floridus and Asian Sinocalycanthus chinensis, this cultivar combines characteristics from both parents. It is well suited to woodland gardens, mixed borders, foundation plantings, and specimen settings, where its unusual flowers and handsome foliage provide memorable seasonal interest.
