PUBLIC GARDENS

Kubota Garden

Kubota Garden is a beautiful 20-acre Japanese garden located in the Rainier Beach neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. Established in 1927 by Fujitaro Kubota, a Japanese immigrant and self-taught gardener, the garden began as a showcase for his landscaping business, Kubota Gardening Company. Over the years, Kubota transformed the property into a beautifully curated space that blends traditional Japanese garden elements with the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. In 1981, the City of Seattle purchased the garden to preserve it as a public park, ensuring its legacy for future generations.

Kubota Garden is renowned for its intricate design, which includes a series of ponds, waterfalls, and streams that create a tranquil ambiance. Numerous traditional Japanese bridges, such as the iconic red Moon Bridge, are strategically placed throughout the garden, adding to its charm and providing picturesque crossing points over water features. Winding paths and trails lead visitors through various garden sections, each offering unique views and experiences, while stone lanterns, pagodas, and stepping stones enhance the garden’s aesthetic and cultural authenticity.

The garden boasts a diverse collection of plants, including Japanese maples, azaleas, rhododendrons, and numerous other shrubs and trees. Seasonal blooms, such as cherry blossoms in the spring and vibrant foliage in the fall, offer year-round beauty. Notable areas include the Sunken Garden, featuring a large pond surrounded by lush plantings, and the traditional Tea Garden, perfect for quiet reflection.

Kubota Garden is home to various wildlife species, including birds and koi fish, making it a vibrant ecosystem and a delight for nature enthusiasts. Open to the public year-round with free admission, the garden offers guided tours that provide insights into its history, design, and horticultural highlights. Special events and workshops are also held periodically for gardening enthusiasts.

Kubota Garden is accessible by car and public transportation, with on-site parking available. Paved paths accommodate strollers and wheelchairs, ensuring accessibility for visitors of all ages and abilities. Kubota Garden stands as a testament to the vision and artistry of Fujitaro Kubota, offering a peaceful retreat within the bustling city of Seattle and blending cultural heritage with natural beauty to create a beloved destination for both locals and tourists.
