Dahlias

Dahlias are the showstoppers of the late-summer and fall garden, offering an almost unmatched range of flower forms, sizes, and colors. From tight pompons and neat balls to dinner-plate decoratives and waterlily types, their blooms carry borders and cutting gardens right up to the first frost. With sturdy stems, reliable tuberous growth, and season-long color, dahlias bring drama, structure, and abundant cut flowers to sunny, well-drained sites.

Dahlias

How to Choose

Flower form: Balls, pompons, decoratives, cactus, waterlily and dinner-plate types each read differently in a border or bouquet.

Bloom size: Compact singles suit the front of a border, while large decoratives make statement accents at the back.

Height and staking: Taller varieties need sturdy stakes; dwarfer types stand on their own in mixed plantings.

Sun and drainage: Full sun and free-draining soil give the heaviest bloom, and tubers are lifted where winters are cold and wet.
