About this plant
Rhododendron kesangiae is an evergreen shrub to small tree valued for its bold, leathery leaves with a pale buff to silvery felt on the undersides. In spring, typically April to May, it produces large, rounded trusses of bell- to funnel-shaped flowers in clear rose-pink tones that can soften as the blooms mature.
Native to high-elevation fir and hemlock forests of Bhutan, this species was named in honor of Bhutan's Royal Grandmother, Ashi Kesang Choden Wangchuck. The combination of oversized foliage, felted leaf undersides, and generous spring trusses makes it a memorable plant for sheltered woodland gardens and cool, humid landscapes where its scale and texture can be appreciated.
