Shrubs
Rhododendron kesangiae
Kesang Rhododendron
Rhododendron kesangiae is an evergreen shrub to small tree valued for its bold, leathery leaves with a pale buff to silvery felt on the undersides. In spring, typically April to May, it produces large, rounded trusses of bell- to funnel-shaped flowers in clear rose-pink tones that can soften as the blooms mature.
Native to high-elevation fir and hemlock forests of Bhutan, this species was named in honor of Bhutan's Royal Grandmother, Ashi Kesang Choden Wangchuck.

Design tip
Allow Rhododendron kesangiae to become a commanding anchor rather than crowding it among similarly substantial shrubs. Surrounding it with smaller, finer-leaved plants will emphasize its bold foliage and tree-like scale, creating a more layered and balanced composition throughout the year.
